At DAV Louisiana, our mission is to support and advocate for every veteran and their family—especially as you plan for retirement and beyond. We know financial peace of mind is essential, and understanding how state tax benefits work for your hard-earned retirement income is a critical part of that.
How Louisiana Honors Your Service—and Your Retirement
Louisiana law offers meaningful exemptions for retirement income, recognizing the contributions of veterans, public servants, teachers, and local heroes right here at home. You deserve to keep as much of your retirement as possible, and we want you to know about these important tax exclusions:
1. If You’re 65 or Older—Up to $6,000 Excluded Annually
For our senior members, Louisiana allows you to exclude up to $6,000 in annual retirement income. Couples married and both aged 65 or older may each receive the exclusion. This is real money back in the pockets of those who dedicated years to their communities and country.
2. Federal Retirement Benefits—Including Military and Survivor Plans
Whether your career was in the military or federal civil service, Louisiana honors federal retirement benefits—including survivor plans—for full exclusion from state income tax. If you receive railroad retirement benefits, you’re also protected.
3. Social Security Benefits
If your Social Security income is taxed at the federal level, it’s not taxed by Louisiana. For so many DAV Louisiana members, this means extra financial relief each year.
4. State, Teacher & Local Retirement Systems
Retired teachers, police officers, state employees, firefighters, local government staff: Louisiana law provides full exclusions for retirement benefits from dozens of public retirement systems, including DROP account withdrawals. Your legacy and service to Louisiana matter, and the law reflects that.
Why These Exclusions Matter for Our DAV Family
Our members have given so much—on the battlefield, in classrooms, and throughout Louisiana communities. These exemptions mean less money paid to the state and more financial flexibility for you and your loved ones. It’s one of the many ways our state says thank you.
